The Kūrtõs Kalács family business has been delighting New Zealanders with their authentic Hungarian pastries for 16 years.
Since 2009, they’ve been a staple at various markets around town and we are so glad to have them here with us at 269, where they continue to share their passion for this traditional treat.
Originating from Transylvania in the late 16th century, Kūrtõskalács is a unique pastry made from sweet yeast dough. A strip of dough is spun and wrapped around a cone-shaped spit, then roasted over charcoal and basted with butter. The surface is coated in granulated sugar, which caramelizes into a crispy, golden-brown crust. For an extra flavour boost, customers can choose from various toppings, including ground walnuts, cinnamon, or even sprinkles!
